Beauty and Spiritual Hunger in the Heart of Mexico

GuanajuatoLast month I spent 6 days in the geographical heart of Mexico, the State of Guanajuato.  During our five days in Leon, Guanajuato and one-day tour of Guanajuato, Guanajuato, I was charmed by the idyllic beauty of the region, while at the same time, deeply saddened and challenged by the lack of Christian witness in the area.

The Bajio region of Mexico is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes, history and architecture of Mexico.  Thousands of tourists visit every year, and many Mexican Roman Catholics make spiritual pilgrimages to the region.  What broke my heart, however, is that less than one percent of the inhabitants of the Bajio region of central Mexico are born-again Christians, and many have never even heard the Gospel.

We decided to convene the board meetings of Christian Fellowship Union in Leon, Guanajuato, to see the need for ourselves, as a board, and to encourage Flavio and Tere Ruiz (church planters), and Shane and Lia Bradley (CFU missionaries), who are working to reach Leon for Christ.

During our visit, I spoke with several taxi drivers who had never heard the Gospel before, and Loraine Johnson prayed with 3 ladies who worked at the hotel to receive Jesus Christ as their Savior. All of them were immediately plugged in with a local Bible study, and were serious about following the Lord.

Millions of people are hungry to hear the good news about Christ just a one day’s drive south of our border.  As you watch the videos of the trip below, let God speak to your heart about spreading the Gospel to those who have never heard.    My dad’s voice is featured in the first video, an appeal for Christian workers put together by Flavio and Tere.

Jesus said, “Look at the fields…they are ripe for harvest.”
